Davinci Resolve Dailies

There are several ways to use Davinci Resolve to make ProRes dailies. I have made up pdf's of some popular dailies procedures. The pdf's can be found in the PDF Resource Library located in the navigation bar underneath Doug's Blog on the top tool bar.

All the ProResDailies procedures from 1-7 are based on 23.98 base settings. If you are working in a different base (like 29.97) then you need to amend all frames per second details and make new settings.

When working in 4K SXS recordings (not RAW with the R5) please remember that the proxy is always a 16x9 image which is derived by slightly cropping the sides of the 4K 17x9 image. Even though you may choose letterbox in the video menu output settings of the F55 the letterbox choice is inactive and only available with the R5 recorder set to Raw with HD proxy available on the SxS cards. So, if you want to work with the full captured 17x9 aspect ratio in ProRes you can achieve that only by transcoding from the 4K files, not the SUB files.

You will have black bars on the top and bottom of the image. If you want to use the SUB files to transcode you will only get a 16x9 cropped full raster image. Be careful when choosing to transcode from the SUB files because you will also have a S02 extension on every clip which differs from the 4K clips so if the editor is conforming back to 4K they will have to deal with this extension difference.

Also if any 2K or 2K HFR footage is shot on this same card there won’t be any proxy for those files because when you record in 2K the camera only records those files, no proxy.

Here is a brief description of each ProResDailies procedures:

ProResDailies1: HDXAVCREC709(23.98)(16x9)toProResHQ(16x9) Davinci Resolve Dailies Procedure for HD(1920x1080)XAVC REC709(23.98)(16x9) to ProResHQ(16x9) dailies for ONLINE HD editing. May be used when HFR HD shots are also recorded because all the files will appear as CLIPS, there is no other proxy files.

ProResDailies2: 4KXAVCSlog2(23.98)(17x9)toProResHQ(16x9) Davinci Resolve Dailies Procedure for 4K XAVC Slog2(23.98)(17x9) to ProResHQ(16x9) dailies for ONLINE HD(16x9) editing. This setting will crop off the sides of the 17x9 frame and yield a full raster 16x9 image. This where you have a choice: whether you wish to transcode from the full 4K files or from the HD Proxy. Be aware that the HD proxy adds an S02 extension to the end of every clip so if the editor is going to reconfirm later to the 4K clips they will have to deal with either renaming or removing the S02 extension. If the editor is simply going to edit and never reconfirm to 4K then using the SUB clips to transcode will be a lot faster. Be aware though that if you use the SUBclips that if there was any HFR material shot (2K) then there will not be any HD proxy from those clips in the SUB directory. Safer to transcode from the 4K but it will take a lot longer, like 8 times longer. PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU CHOOSE TO USE SUBCLIPS HD PROXY FROM 4K SXS ORIGINATED MATERIAL YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE A 16X9 IMAGE AS THE F55 AUTOMATICALLY CROPS OFF THE SIDES FROM THE 17X9 IMAGE. EVEN THOUGH YOU MAY HAVE CHOSEN LETTERBOX IN THE VIDEO MENU>OUTPUT SETTINGS ON THE F55 THE CAMERA WILL ONLY ALLOW THIS FUNCTION WHEN SHOOTING IN RAW ON THE R5 RAW RECORDER W/SXS PROXY INTERNAL RECORDING. IF YOU WISH TO GET A PRORES TRANSCODE WHICH PRESERVES THE 17X9 IMAGE (W/BLACK BARS AT TOP AND BOTTOM) THEN PLEASE USE ProResDailies4.

ProResDailies3: PLEASE NOTE: This dailies procedure is the same as ProResDailies2. IF YOU CHOOSE TO USE SUBCLIPS HD PROXY FROM 4K SXS ORIGINATED MATERIAL YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE A 16X9 IMAGE AS THE F55 AUTOMATICALLY CROPS OFF THE SIDES FROM THE 17X9 IMAGE. EVEN THOUGH YOU MAY HAVE CHOSEN LETTERBOX IN THE VIDEO MENU>OUTPUT SETTINGS ON THE F55 THE CAMERA WILL ONLY ALLOW THIS FUNCTION WHEN SHOOTING IN RAW ON THE R5 RAW RECORDER W/SXS PROXY INTERNAL RECORDING. IF YOU WISH TO GET A PRORES TRANSCODE WHICH PRESERVES THE 17X9 IMAGE (W/BLACK BARS AT TOP AND BOTTOM) THEN PLEASE USE ProResDailies4.

ProResDailies4: 4KXAVCSlog2(23.98)(17x9)toProResHQ(17x9)withtop&bottomblackbars Davinci Resolve Dailies Procedure for 4K XAVC Slog2(23.98)(17x9) to ProResHQ(17x9) dailies for OFFLINE HD(17x9 w/top & bottom black bars) editing. This setting will preserve the sides of the 17x9 frame and yield a full raster 16x9 image which contains top and black bars with a 17x9 frame within. This procedure is the only way to preserve the 17x9 image to prores. You must transcode from 4K Files, not the SUB files, because the Sub Files only contain a cropped 16x9 image when you have recorded in SXS cards only.

ProResDailies5: NO CONTENT - NOT BEING USED CURRENTLY

IF YOU WISH TO GET A PRORES TRANSCODE WHICH PRESERVES THE 17X9 IMAGE (W/BLACK BARS AT TOP AND BOTTOM) THEN PLEASE USE ProResDailies7.
